I’m Baaaaack!

10 09 2011

After a very long bento haitus, I am ready to get back to bento-ing! Initially, I just burned out on doing bentos every day…and feeling obligated to take pics every day…and feeling obligated to write something every day. Then, when my munchkin started kindergarten, I thought I’d start packing her lunches, but I was honestly not feeling up to it. However, this summer, she atteneded day camp for a few months and about that time I determined to get our eating habits under control while hubby was gone (he’s in the Army and deployed to Afghanistan…and a junk food junkie). So I started packing her lunches for day camp. I honestly didn’t try to get fancy because, being a single mom working full-time, I didn’t have much time or energy to do so, but she loved them jsut the same. Unfortunately, in the afternoon, they would put their lunch bags outside with their backpacks until the parents arrived to pick them up. It was hot out…and most of the boxes I sent with her were the locking type…and I found out, the hard way, that heat makes them explode. So after a couple of weeks, all of the boxes ended up broken. Since Ichiban Kan isn’t selling online anymore, and I didn’t feel like dropping $20-30 a box, I just made do with Glad containers.

However….all that changed when I found AllThingsForSale.com. They have a huge selection of bento boxes and accessories in a great range of prices, with boxes ranging from $2 up to $25. Perfect! So I ordered enough to start rebuilding my supply. All of this pictured was $67 total (shipping is a flat $6 anywhere in the US). I am so excited and can’t wait to start bento-ing again!

From left to right: Grey Lock & Lock Set (includes two boxes, a water bottle, spoon & fork, and bag), Leaf Shaped Silicone Dividers, Mayo Cups, Heart Picks, EasyLunchboxes Set, Bluebird Box, Pink Square Box, Sandwich Cutters, PInk Checkered Box, Swirl PIcks

Bento…Organized!

6 10 2008

Since my bento drawer in the kitchen was packed to overflowing, I decided to retask a 4-drawer unit that I had been using for Avon samples and supplies back when I was selling it. It worked great! The only downside is that none of the drawers are completely full yet so everything slides around when I open and close the drawers. Just another excuse to buy more…bwahahaha! >:-)

More Ichiban Kan Goodies!

27 09 2008

Just got my latest order in from Ichiban Kan. Not as big at the last couple, but still lots of fun stuff. 🙂

Gyoza maker, Mayo cups, Natural Lunch lock seal box, Natural Lunch belts, Card wallet, Tenmari lock seal box, Furikake shakers

Left to Right: Gyoza maker, Mayo cups, Natural Lunch lock seal box, Natural Lunch belts, Card wallet, Tenmari lock seal box, Furikake shakers

Comments:

  • Gyoza maker: I tried this out right after I took this pic to make some pb&j faux gyoza out of tortillas. It worked pretty well, but I doubt that I’d want to go through that much effort on a regular basis. They turned out cute, though.
  • Mayo cups: These are super-cute. They’re both divided cups, one has three sections and the other has two, so you can put more than one type of sauce in them. They also come with cute little stickers to label what type of sauces are in the cup. I wish I’d gotten more than one set. Hopefully, they’ll get more in stock.
  • Boxes: I got two more seal lock boxes because I’m really beginning to like them better than the tiered boxes.
  • Belts: Got these for the other tiered boxes I have.
  • Card wallet: This was actually extra in the box. I didn’t order it, but it will come in handy for when I’m at the gym or on Guard duty and I don’t need to carry my entire wallet/purse.
  • Furikake shakers: These are cute…they look like little houses.

Latest Bento Goodies!

9 09 2008

My second Ichiban Kan order came in today! Yay! So many fun and cute bento goodies!

Putifresh Pink Apple boxes (lock box is for Munchkin, 2-tier is mine) with matching utensils (which are for Munchkin too)
Black chopstick case (that you can barely see at the bottom)
Not shown: Putifresh Pink Apple belt (because it was buried in the bottom of the box and I’d forgotten about it until I went to assemble my bento)

Accessories (L to R): furikake stencils, antibacterial sheets, Lovely Friend dividers, Together animal picks
star and heart egg molds

The background pattern for both pics is the eco bag I also bought.

Now that I have all of this, I’m off to make two bentos for tomorrow. Munckin’s daycare is having show and tell and she has to bring something that is square, yellow, or begins with a “B”….and we decided that her square fairy “bento box” would work perfectly!

No Bento for You!

29 08 2008

Or for me. I decided to get some cleaning done after munchkin went to bed last night (which is usually my bento-making time). So, no bento today. But….happy news on the bento front anyway…ICHIBAN KAN HAS RESTOCKED! Woo hoo! I nabbed up a bunch of bento goodies for both me and munchkin because she’s caught my bento fever and has been begging me for her own bento box.

This time I snagged for me:

  • Putifresh Pink Apple 2-tier box and belt,
  • Flower eco bag
  • Hana Tombo chopkstick case.

For munchkin I got:

  • Putifresh Pink Apple seal container and utensil set
  • Lovely Friend dividers.

For both of us, I got:

  • Together animal picks
  • Star and heart egg molds
  • Furkaki stencils
  • Antibacterial sheets.

Whee…I can’t wait to make cute lunches for my baby!

24 08 2008

My mother and I did a little shopping this afternoon and I managed to pick up a couple of super-cute mini paper punches at Michael’s for only $1 each! The little sakura flowers and dragonflies are soo cute! I couldn’t believe how much regular paper punches are…anywhere from $5 up to $20! Yikes! I was hoping to find a 3-pack for around $5 because I figured that plain ole paper punches had to be cheaper that “specialty” nori punches…so much for that theory.

I managed to restrain myself from picking up a few food items from World Market, rationalizing that I could get them cheaper at the Oriental Market tomorrow after work. I’m itching to try some Pocky…and they had some cute candies called “Flower Kiss” that looked and sounded so pretty…and I need some more rice crackers.

I think I’m getting the hang of taking food pictures a little better now…thanks to the helpfulness and tips from [info]nilmandra over at [info]bentolunch. I’m having fun experimenting with all of the settings on my camera.

Bento Goodies!

21 08 2008

They finally arrived today! I officially LOVE Ichiban Kan. All of this for only $17…and that includes shipping! I can’t wait until they get restocked so I can snag up some more fun bento goodies.

The goodies (from left to right):

  • Liberty “Man’s” bento box (medium size) with matching chopsticks and belt: The box is a bit small, too small for the full-sized chopsticks to fit in the lid, unfortunately, but they are meant to go in the large size which I’m planning on snagging as soon as they come back in stock again. This would make a nice snack bento to pair with the large box for lunch. The belt is meant to be used with both boxes and is kind of pointless to use with just the one box because you can’t tighten it up enough.
  • Natural Lunch green oval two-tier box: Very cute. The top section seems really small, but the bottom section seems a generous size, so I guess it all evens out. So far I think this is my favorite.
  • Mini sauce bottles (12-pack): These are so cute. I especially love the little fish bottles, even if they look like they wouldn’t hold much. But the rectangular bottles look like they would hold a good amount so this is a good assortment of sizes.
  • Wooden chopsticks set: They’re cute…they’re chopsticks. Not much more to say.
  • Natural Lunch ivory 2-tier box: I like the portion sizes of this one the best of all of them, but the kawaii-factor of it is zero. Very blah-looking box…it needs stickers or something.
  • Sushi grass dividers: They’re green…umm..that’s about it.
  • Fun cube rice mold – heart: Super-cute. I can’t wait to make little furikake-heart-embellished rice cubes with this.
